Label-free Exponential Signal-Amplification System

BCR has developed a biosensor platform that uses engineered bacterial spores (F-spores™) as ultrasensitive nanodetectors capable of emitting fluorescent light when they encounter bacterial cells.  The recognition and reporting processes occur in near real-time.

The LEXSAS™ has been adapted for using to monitor bacterial contamination of blood products used in hospital settings.  Platelets are particularly susceptible to contamination because they are stored at room temperature.  The LEXSAS™ can detect low levels of bacteria in the platelet preparations used for transfusions.
